Students at Central were welcomed to school by post-it notes with positive messages on them during the last late start day. Small acts of kindness like this are the focus of the club Character Counts! Student Life. “(We) strive to spread messages about positive and good character among the students, faculty and staff. This is done through various activities we plan so that everyone involved has a sense of community and citizenship during the events,” sponsor Ms. Amanda Hurban said.
Character Counts has over 50 members this year and is led by an executive board made up of dedicated students as well as faculty sponsors Hurban and Ms. Fawn Kravets.
Character Counts has a full docket for November. “For November we are creating a different activity/event for every day of anti-bullying week, such as mix-it-up day and putting up posters around the school,” said Danielle Januszyk, executive board member. “We also are creating several teams to help contribute to NHS’ turkey bowl, participating in the autism walk together, and several other projects that are still being fine-tuned.”
There are many other plans in the works for the rest of the year that will help Character Counts carry out its mission at Central. Hurban said, “We strive to make each other feel welcomed within our school community by doing acts of kindness such as displaying students’ pictures on walls, creating positive messages on poster boards, etc.”
