On Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, Hinsdale Central competed for the first time this season against Downers Grove North High School and Willowbrook High School. Both the JV and Varsity teams were quite pleased with their performances as JV beat both DGN and Willowbrook while Varsity defeated Willowbrook but lost to DGN.
The JV team, which included Caitlin Wong, Sarita Deshpande, Priyanka Kadari, Alex Newkirk, Rucha Deshpande, and Bisini Panicker, had dominant victories over both its competitors, beating DGN 235-35 and beating Willowbrook 200-75. The team was led by its sophomore captain, Sarita Deshpande, who was satisfied overall with the performance of the team. “I’m really proud of my teammates for working well together. I would say that star players for this meet included Caitlin, Alex, and myself,” Deshpande said.
Of course, a record of 2-0 does not at all mean that the JV team can relax. Deshpande still thinks that there are ways the team can function even more efficiently. “For the next meet, we want to make sure we know everyone’s strengths and weaknesses, so we know when to put people in and take people out during the meet,” Deshpande said .The next meet will take place on Nov. 17, 2011 against Downers Grove South and Oak Park River Forest.
Meanwhile, the Varsity team experienced both triumph and defeat against its competitors. The team beat Willowbrook 285-195 but lost to DGN 229-351. But this still did not deter Varsity coach Mr. McCloud’s confidence in the team. “We have a bunch of talented kids, and we have a good chance of performing well at conference,” McCloud said. The coach also named Max Rong and Patrick Peckner as the star players in that evening’s competition.
Like the JV team, the Varsity team is currently preparing for the next meet against Downers Grove South and Oak Park River Forest and is assessing ways to enhance their performance so that they can defeat both their competitors at the next meet. “We have to trust ourselves, improve our response time, and be willing to take some chances,” McCloud said. Other than improving their style of competing, both Varsity and JV work to improve their knowledge in the various topics every Tuesday and Thursday after school.
