Between Thursday, Sept. 7 and Saturday, Sept. 9, the Drama Club will perform “Save the Date” for their annual September Show at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.

“Save the Date” is a show composed of a variety of theatrical pieces that explores the different forms, phases, and meanings of love. It’s about a bride who, right before her wedding ceremony, gets cold feet. With the help of her wedding coordinator, she examines stories from her friends and family and considers all that they have taught her about love.

While shows that the Drama Club has performed in the past have been adaptations from Broadway musicals or Shakespearean plays, “Save the Date” is an original show, completely written by students and directed by Mr. Paul Woods.  

“The directors used snippets of scenes from all types of theatre in order to make this show,” said Micky Horstman, senior. “It’s an original creation, which is something really different than what we have done in the past.”

Scenes in the show were influenced by musicals, movies, TV shows, forensic pieces, plays, and essentially anything else that inspired the cast. However, to keep the overarching storyline in the show cohesive, Mr. Woods and Ms. Erin Oeschel wrote the introduction, transitions, and ending.

“We’ve pulled material from all over the place so don’t be surprised when a classic Broadway show-tune follows a pop song,” said Megan Melia, senior.

The Drama Club held auditions for the September Show at the end of last spring, and rehearsals began in the summer. The cast met on average three times a week during the summer to brainstorm storylines and scenes.

On Aug. 21, three-hour rehearsals began every day after school, where the cast focused on actually performing their original show. In the days leading up to the premiere, rehearsals have been getting significantly longer, lasting from 3 to 9 p.m.

“We all feel like we’ve had a really significant role in helping create this and I think we all have a new appreciation for the directorial and logistical side of theatre now that we’ve experienced it firsthand,” Melia said.  “It’s been, by far, the most unique and hands on theatre experience I’ve had here.”

Also unlike shows that the drama club has presented in the past, “Save the Date” has unique staging demands. Because the show is a cabaret, the scenes will all take place in front of the main red curtain, some occurring in the aisles, on the stage, and on the platforms, making the audience feel like they are actually part of the wedding.

However, this unique stage set up for the show has led to challenges for the stage crew.

“From a sound standpoint we’ve had to get creative with ways to cut down feedback because of the placement of the show and it’s abnormally large cast,” said Ashley Haggard, junior crew member.
