Robin Owens saves the world… and the school dress code
Robin Owens, senior, is taking action against the school dress code.
“[I am] trying to reform the dress code so that students cannot be pulled from class to take care of dress code violations,” Owens said.
Owens sees an issue in how much time is taken out of class for dress code violations. She believes teachers should value this time in class more than they should in sending someone away for wearing what they deem as inappropriate clothing, which she says is rarely seen as inappropriate in the eyes of their peers.
Owens says she has never been dress coded. However, the instance that sparked her interest for this movement occurred when a friend of her was dress coded.
She says that the way it was handled “angered the both of us.”
“The fact that she missed class time because of her clothes, because someone deemed it ‘distracting,’ upset the both of us,” Owens said.

Besides spreading the news of her movement between her peers, Owens has been conferencing with one of the deans. Owens sites the dean as “extremely helpful in getting the ball rolling.”
She says she has high hopes for her future plans with her campaign.
As of right now, Owens is just planning to change the necessity of students being pulled out of their classes. So far, she cites that everyone she has mentioned her idea to has responded with positive feedback. She only hopes the administration will see it in a similar light.
With her work, Owens hopes to not only fix this part of the dress code, but to open the door for further reform in the future. To do your part in the cause, take this questionnaire that asks about students’ experiences with past violations of the dress code and how they were handled.
