First period was draining and this student is searching for an early morning pick-me-up. Luckily, the Devil’s Roast, HCHS’s coffee shop, is open for business and has been for a year now. From smoothies and refreshers to teas and lattes, the Devil’s Roast has a variety of options.
One year post-opening calls for a recap of the Devil’s Roast’s successes so far. Opening last spring, the DR (Devil’s Roast) has quickly become the lifeblood of HCHS’s caffeine-addicted student body. For example, Rayjan Prakash, junior, said that he buys coffee from the DR almost daily.
“Caffeine empowers me to slay the day,” Prakash said.
Even teachers find the DR to be essential to surviving long school days. Wendy Orloff-Bowman, calculus teacher, expressed her love of chai lattes from this convenient cafe.
“First semester, I was addicted, I must admit,” Orloff-Bowman said. “I started going a few weeks after hearing kids talk about the things they liked.”
Throughout the last year, students and faculty alike have been served by the DR baristas, local heroes to those in need of hand-crafted drinks.
“It’s been awesome. I love working over here,” said Amilya Strohecker, DR barista.“[My favorite part] is connecting with the kids.”
The year since the DR’s opening has been a long one, and this cafe will continue to be instrumental to the Hinsdale Central community.
