National Honor Society held their seventh annual date auction on Feb 9. NHS donated the money to the Ronald McDonald Children’s Hospital Loyola University charity center.
“We donate a significant amount of money,” said Fotini Kaufman, senior, who was in charge of the auction.
The bidding prices ranged from $20 to $200. The members put on a performance consisting of videos, songs, and dances, and the bidders that won dates will be able to go mini-golfing, bowling, or to a movie.
Juniors Rosanna Lederhausen and Jill Hardies started the night with a humorous video, followed by juniors Will Leach, Nicky Relias, and Jeremy Cai, who chose to do the same. Seniors Sam Smalling and Riley Strumillo sang, while senior John Stathopoulos accompanied them on the cello. Next was a salsa dance performed by seniors Griffin Johns, Erica Arnold, and Sarah Klepacki. Seniors Danny Thomson, Coco Arima, and Kristina Stang created a video based off of the TV show Pretty Little Liars, and the show was closed by seniors Gen Carter, Genna Heidkamp, and Tommy Griffin, who also created a video.
Heidkamp was auctioned for $200. She believes the date auction provides fun on a weeknight. “Everyone is showing an awkward, yet hilarious side,” she said.
“The date auction is pretty original, there is not much like it and we have been doing it for so long,” Kaufman said. Kaufman’s favorite part was the time spent rehearsing for the date auction. Hannah Lillioja, senior, also helped plan the date auction and shared a similar sentiment.
“I think it’s two-fold; I like it because all of the money is going to a great cause, and I get to be around all of my friends while being able to help other people,” Lillioja said. “The best part was trying to get all of this organized chaos to work.”
