Central’s Scholastic Bowl team had another strong performance last Wednesday, Feb. 22 with a victory over Hinsdale South, which qualified them to compete in regionals. Coming off a strong season as conference champions, the team is preparing to compete against Oak Park River Forest in two weeks for the regional title.
“We had an awesome season,” said Alex Newkirk, junior. “Our record, 11-1 in conference and 14-2 overall is pretty darn good.” Newkirk described the victory over Hinsdale South as a true team effort. “At one point we were down 105 points, but the seniors really kicked it into gear and we ended up finishing strong and winning.”
Sagar Dommaraju, junior, said the highlight of Wednesday night was being presented the conference trophy. “The trophy represents all the hard work we’ve put into this season, work that will pay off when we compete in regionals against Oak Park River Forest.”
According to Newkirk and Dommaraju, Central’s chances at winning regionals are strong but not guaranteed. “OPRF is a really good team, however, we beat them earlier this year so I think we have a pretty good shot of moving on to sectionals over them,” Dommaraju said. “OPRF is a team with a lot of experience that always shows up with a strong team,” Newkirk said. “We have to be ready.”
