The ecology club from Hinsdale Central, Hinsdale South and those who participated in the Toshiba Youth Conference are raising funds to bring solar panels to District 86 high schools.
To raise the funds, the science department is selling sunglasses for $5. There was a concert with performances by student acts Vinyl Surprise and Marirose Weldon in addition to a silent auction on Friday, May 3.
The Science Department’s goal is to raise $55,000 in fundraisers. “Our goal is to make $108,000. Julie Gaubatz and I have written several grants to raise money and we have secured $11,000 in funds so far,” said Mrs. Lisa Fernandez, Science Department chair.
Vinyl Surprise is using this as an opportunity to promote its upcoming album. “We actually just finished recording an album at Bomb Shelter Studios in Nashville this week, so we’re all really excited to be able to play some of our new stuff for everybody. The album is called Sweet Thingand we’re looking at a mid-June release, so it’ll be nice to promote that at the show,” said senior Jack Kengott, guitarist and background vocalist of Vinyl Surprise.
Students can also help raise funds by eating at Pei Wei during a certain time period.
According to Fernandez, this event has been a huge amount of work for teachers and parents. This event is unique in that it is obtaining funds in a variety of different methods. “We’re not asking for money from the district; it’s all donations [and fundraising events],” Fernandez said.
