Model UN students attended a conference on Feb. 5 at the University of Chicago to improve speaking and debating skills.

Over the weekend, Feb. 5-8, the HCHS Model UN team participated in the Model United Nations conference at the University of Chicago, or MUNUC. I and over 20 other students participated in the conference, where we, along with members of other schools from all over the country, tried to come up with new plans to help solve crises like those in Syria and Ukraine.

The team left Thursday, Feb. 5, and returned on Sunday, Feb. 8, and met with considerable success at the conference. Three delegations, or teams, won awards in their respective committees, with Sagar Sharma, senior, winning Honorable Mention for his work in the Press Core, and Zach Wong, senior, and David Schwab, sophomore, winning Verbal Commendation for their work in ECOFIN, or Economic and Financial Affairs Council.

Meera Krishnan and Chitra Balakrishnan, sophomores, won Honorable Mention for their work in the ICPO, or Interpol. In addition, the rest of the team, which was made up of many others who were participating as delegates of either Belize or Kuwait, did very well at the conference and gained quite a bit of experience.

“It was my first time at a conference, so it was harder than expected, but by the end of it I felt a lot better about my abilities in MUN,” said Aneesh Balusu, freshman.

All in all, it was a great experience for the members of the Model UN team and they hope to do well at their next conference in April.
