On Aug. 15, Hinsdale Central opened its doors to a new school year. Students and staff put in a lot of effort to plan activities to welcome incoming transfer students and the class of 2028.
One group of students who ensured a smooth first day of school were the Link Crew Leaders. Link Crew Leaders are a group dedicated to welcoming incoming freshmen during the start of the school year and continuing to meet with them throughout the year. Many members had varying reasons for joining Link Crew.
“I joined Link Crew because when I was a freshman, I was extremely lost, especially since it was during COVID,” said Nicole Garcia, senior. “I wanted to make sure that I did everything possible, so if my freshmen had any questions they wouldn’t have to worry like I did.”
Upperclassmen went through an extensive application process this past school year in order to become Link Crew Leaders for the class of 2028. Once selected, the leaders attended a six-hour training session during the summer in order to prepare for the first day of school. During the training session, Link Crew Leaders learned how to greet the freshmen, along with how to lead games to help the freshmen get acclimated to the school and to their classmates.
Another group of students dedicated to welcoming newcomers to Hinsdale Central are the student ambassadors. Student ambassadors are members from Ambassadors Club who aid transfer students by walking them to their classes and sitting with them during lunch. This program is especially meaningful for those who have transferred to Central in the past.
“I joined student ambassadors because I was a new student sophomore year, and my ambassador was really, really nice,” said Zahra Haque, senior. “It helped me a lot with adapting to the school, and I wanted to do that for other people as well.”
Together, clubs like Ambassadors Club and Link Crew are helping create an easy transition for new students during the first days of school. Through providing guidance, support, and friendly smiles, upperclassmen will continue to make new students feel welcome as the year goes on.
