As the fall rolls in, a tradition many people partake in comes back to life. Pumpkin carving is a fun fall activity anyone can do. Pumpkin carving is the Halloween tradition of cutting faces and designs into pumpkins.
According to Britannica pumpkin carving came from the Celtic tradition of carving faces into root vegetables and turnips to ward off evil spirits. It was brought to the US by Irish immigrants, who thought the pumpkins were better to work on than the root vegetables and turnips. The Irish immigrants gave us the activity we all love today.
I asked junior Addisynn Krogstie, what she thought about pumpkin carving.
“I love pumpkin carving, it’s something I do every year with my friends and family, we put the pumpkins out on our porch,” Krogsite said.
People make all sorts of different things on their pumpkins, some opt for a conventional Jack-O-Lantern look, and some make funny faces. Senior Mason Baskel carved a Jack-O-Lantern-esque pumpkin.
“I decided to do a conventional design for the pumpkin, I gave it narrow eyes, and pointy teeth, to make it look scary,” Baskel said.
I always like making pumpkins with a goofy face, because their easier to do and I always find them more entertaining, this year junior Leila Gjeldum and I carved pumpkins, and she had a creative idea for hers.
“I wanted to do something I never saw made before, so I made a pumpkin house, I carved a window, a door, and steps, and put a mini pumpkin inside of the big pumpkin,” Gjeldum said.
