On Wednesday Nov. 6 Hinsdale Central celebrated Diwali in different fun ways, including henna tables, diya clay pot decorating and playing Bollywood music in the hallways during passing periods.
Diwali is a Hindu festival that celebrates light and expels darkness from life. The celebration represents bravery, freedom and triumph over evil.
“Diwali is a festival about light overcoming darkness,” said Grishma Naidu, junior. “We set off sparklers and light candles for a week.”
At Hinsdale Central, the South Asian Student Union (SASU), came together to represent Diwali and show an insight of how it is celebrated. SASU arranged henna tables during all lunch periods where all students can come and get their henna done on their hands. They decorated the commons by placing Indian cultural scarves over the walls and also decorated the stairs with marigold flowers. Students could also paint diya clay bowls and decorate them.
“Central did a great job with Diwali, especially with the music and henna,” said Sofiya Qazi, senior. “I hope we continue to celebrate Diwali at our school.”
The SASU board continues to show all festivals celebrated at Hinsdale Central including Garba, creating a fun and engaging environment for everyone.
“The SASU board and Mrs. Patel come up with the ideas of what we do, and the rest of the club members bring those ideas to life,” said Sanya Sidhu, sophomore.
