The security at Hinsdale Central is always changing for the better and making school safe for everybody. New rules have been made for this semester to ensure everybody at Central feels comfortable.
A new system for the second semester has been implemented. The metal detectors will be used on random days at Door 5 at the Grant street entrance, and students will not be notified beforehand. Students are required to remove their Chromebooks from their backpacks and walk through metal detectors. Students are encouraged to come early to school to avoid getting tardy for being late that day.
“I think they made good ideas; I think it is efficient and well-thought out,” said Sakina Moosabhoy, senior. “The safety at school seems pretty solid and good.”
Students who are in the study hall are required to scan-in and report to either the library or multi-purpose room. If a student can leave with an issued pass from the teacher which shows that they are coming from study hall and even have to log in and out on a sheet.
“Students first have to sign out on the sign-out sheet and then get a pass from us,” said Janice Hall, student supervisor. “This ensures safety and we know where the student should be.”

Although the new measures are to provide an even safer environment, some students are not pleased with the changes. Specifically, many have voiced complaints about the unscheduled weapons detection deployment since they will not receive an excused tardy if they are late to their first period class. Some students have reported being up to 30 minutes late to their first period; however, Mr. Bill Walsh, principal, reported in an email that they have improved the efficiency of checking students in. He had also given an announcement over the PA days before the Jan. 9 implementation and advised all students to remove known metal triggers and to arrive early to campus to avoid tardies.
“I don’t think we should sacrifice school time for security; security is very important but I think there are other ways to implement it,” said Zahra Haque, senior.
Hinsdale Central’s staff and security consider security as their number one priority and do everything to implement ultimate safety throughout their school.
“I think the school security is effective, they implement good and thorough rules a student should follow,” Hall said. “Remember that if you see something, always say something.”
