On Jan. 20, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.” This decision happened because he wanted to promote American pride and identity.
“I don’t really have an opinion on the name change to Gulf of America,” said Armann Ghouse, senior. “It is ok I guess.”
The name Gulf of Mexico has been changed to Gulf America on Google Maps and Apple Maps for United States users according to Google. And, from personal experience, if you search up the Gulf of Mexico on Google, it pops up as the Gulf of America.
It comes with some controversy though. Some people do not like the name change because the rest of the world other than the United States is going to call it the Gulf of Mexico.
“The rest of the world is gonna call it the Gulf of Mexico, so I don’t really care,” said Josh Bey, senior.
According to CNN news, Mexico also threatened to sue Google over the name change. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the president of Mexico also said that the renaming is “incorrect” and the name change only changed the name within the United State’s nautical territory. This extends only about 22 miles from the U.S. coast.
Some don’t mind the new name.
“The name change is cool,” said Teddy O’Hara, senior.
Overall, I don’t really care about the name change and don’t think it is that important.
