On Sept. 25, Netflix released a new limited series following the life of the former WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) founder, Vince McMahon. The docuseries is directed by Chris Smith, who also directed the hit show “Tiger King.” It illustrates McMahon’s rise to power and the scandals that led to his eventual downfall.
Mr. McMahon was born into a wrestling family. His father was a wrestling promoter, which brought him onto the scene. In 1982, Mr. McMahon bought the World Wrestling Federation, also known as the WWF.
The 80s and 90s were the peak of the WWF which was run by superstars like Hulk Hogan, The Rock, and Stone Cold Steve Austin.
The show goes into depth about critical moments in McMahon’s and WWE history. Each episode focuses on a different scandal, but my favorite was episode five, “Family Business.” I found it surprising how much turmoil he put his family through with the on and off-screen relationships.
“It’s crazy to think about what Mr. McMahon was actually able to get away with,” said Mason Baskel, senior.
His relationship with Trish Stratus, who was a seven-time WWE champion during the late 90s and early 2000s, was a key part of that episode. He would make her do all sorts of weird things on TV just to advance the story.
“My favorite episode was episode three… the business side of the WWE was cool to me… [and] it was cool how Mr. McMahon dealt with his competitors,” said Jacob Turnbull, senior.
Overall I thought the show was interesting. It rehashes family stories and shows the intricacies of running a massive company like the WWE, all while challenging Mr. McMahon’s wrestling legacy.
“I liked the show. I didn’t know a lot about wrestling prior to watching, but the show explained everything very well,” said Brody Peterson, senior.
