Swimming towards state
Michael Dietrich & Yu-Lin Yang
This year, the boy’s swim and dive team is coming back from a state title. 9 qualified swimmers, Franco Reyes, Craig Smith, Tommy Gruchala, Donovan Lahmann, Trystan Lundgren, Tommy Gruchala, Cole Grosshans, Will Bowater, and Billy Leader, are trying to bring back the title for our school.
“I think we can get the title,” claimed junior Franco Reyes. “We’ve been going hard at practice, and hopefully it is all worth it in the end.”
Compared to last year, there were 8, 7 of whose points contributed to the state championship.
It was a great start to Coach Barber’s career with training the boys, as it was his first season as the boy’s swim head coach, replacing Corky King. As his second state meet, he hopes to bring yet another state title for the school.
For the seniors, it’s a special meet because they have the unique opportunity of trophying all four years, with 2013 at 2nd place, 2014 at 3rd place, 2015 at 1st, and maybe something great to close out the 2016 season.
“I want a great ending to my swimming career,” explained senior Tommy Gruchala. “But I know I’ve had a great time with these boys. Swimming really has been a experience for me that’s changed me in great ways.”
