The Hinsdale Central Red Devils boys varsity basketball played the Lyons Township Lions on Feb. 19, 2025 at the Lyons Township North Campus. The team narrowly lost 55-58.
“It is a rivalry game, and it’s the final game of the regular season, so the stakes are high,” said Kareem Kassar, junior.
In the first quarter, the Devils had an 18-9 lead over the Lions with scoring from Central team senior members like Dillion Orozco, Eric Kozys, Vince Buzelis, Micheal Howell, Dillon Dell and Tyler Thick.
In the second quarter, the Lions closed the gap to a two point lead, making the score 33-31 at halftime. The scoring from this quarter came from Orozco, Buzelis, Thick, Dell and Howell.
“This game is a lot closer than it should be,” said Charlie Hoyt, junior. “We beat this team by 30 the last time we played them.”
The score was 42-42 going from the third to the fourth quarter. At the end of the fourth quarter, the score was tied at 55-55. With a couple seconds on the clock, a Lyons Township player rushed to about half court and shot with the ball going in, giving the Lions the win over the Devils 55-58.
“That is one of the most heartbreaking ways to lose a basketball game,” said Jeffery Collier, junior.
The Red Devils finish off their regular season with a 28-3 record and a 90.3% win percentage. They also had a school record of 24 straight wins before this game.
Regionals for boys basketball starts on Feb. 24.
