On Feb. 28, the Hinsdale Central Red Devils faced off against the Curie Condors in a IHSA regional playoff game at Curie High school. Hinsdale Central was defeated in a close match with a final score of 57-62.
The game began tightly contested with both teams going back and forth. As time passed throughout the game, Hinsdale Central slowly kept increasing the margin between them. During the second half, the score was Hinsdale Central 26 and Curie 22.
“I’m having lots of fun watching this game,” said Nathan Levendel, senior. “It’s full of intensity and competitiveness.”
During the third quarter, the offensive pace started to slow down and the margin was decreasing rapidly. The score was eventually Hinsdale Central 32 and Curie 31. By the end of the fourth quarter, Curie took the lead back and maintained it for the remainder of the match-up. The game concluded with the Curie Condors winning in the showdown.
“It was a horrible upset…I had a bitter feeling after the game and wished the team went further into the playoffs,” said Nicholas Gebhart, gym teacher.
Despite a phenomenal run in the regular season, Hinsdale Central couldn’t carry that success into the playoffs. The loss came up as a surprise for all due to the fact that Central had a considerable advantage in MaxPreps IHSA basketball rankings. (Central was ranked fifth, while Curie was ranked 27th).
“The loss came as a surprise for me and lots of my friends…I expected the basketball team to go far into the playoffs, especially after a season like that,” said Owen Stamer, senior. “Nonetheless, it was still great seeing that talent play.”
Hinsdale Central ended their season with a record of 29-4. As of now, no further games are scheduled.
