On Saturday, Jan. 18th the social media platform “TikTok” got banned for a total of 12 hours. There had been talk about this band prior to the actual banning of it, and students at Hinsdale Central had a variety of opinions about this decision.
According to CNN “TikTok faced potential bans in several countries, especially the U.S., due to concerns about national security, data privacy, and its ties to China.”
Junior Isabella Tornabene has seen and heard the news about the recent tik tok ban.
“I think that the TikTok ban even being a discussion is unfair and not right,” Toranabe said .
Senior Allison Short has TikTok downloaded on her phone and experienced when it went dark for a total of 12 hours.
“I went on my phone onto TikTok and saw a message saying I couldn’t access the app. That was one of the most boring time periods of my life.” Short said.
Short also mentioned not being able to look up to her favorite creators anymore.
“I look up to so many influencers, and a lot of the time they give me inspiration so not having to talk anymore kind of messes that up for a lot of people.” Short said
Finally, junior Spencer Martin has had TikTok for a while and is very saddened by the talk of the ban.
“I look forward to going on TikTok whenever I’m bored or whenever I have free time I’m always on that app,” Martin said.
I think that TikTok should stay up because it is our First Amendment right. I enjoy using TikTok, and getting inspiration from creators and other people on the app. Many people communicate and come together through using TikTok. Not having it will definitely be a big loss.
