Poetry Club gears up for Open Mic Night

Poetry Club will be hosting Open Mic Night at the Hinsdale Community House on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 7:00 p.m.

Open Mic Night is a monthly tradition now in its second year in which Poetry Club gives students a chance to share whatever they want in front of an audience.

Mrs. Diana Sekura, head of Poetry Club and special education teacher, has high hopes that this event will affect students positively.  “Open Mic Night was started as a way for students to give students an opportunity to perform in a comfortable environment. And that’s in line with Poetry Club’s goal of giving students an opportunity to express themselves,” Sekura said.“Students can make connections and meet other students where they find a common interest. They may not have known that that student sitting in the corner of their biology class actually has the same interests that they do.”

Though Poetry Club is hosting the event, Open Mic Night is not only suited to those who want to perform poetry.  “We felt an Open Mic Night would attract students with a variety of interests,” Sekura said.  Performances may range from music to comedy and everything in between.

Sekura overall hopes not only to get a larger audience this month but also to have the audience walk away with something valuable.  “Students can make connections and meet other students where they find a common interest. They may not have known that that student sitting in the corner of their biology class actually has the same interests that they do,” Sekura said.

Poetry Club is expecting a somewhat larger crowd do to the change of location from Katherine Legge Park to the Community House and increase of awareness.  Saba Imran, sophomore, said, “I didn’t know about Open Mic Night last year.  I might have gone if I had known about it.  But now that I do, I’ll go sometime.”
