Central’s Model UN gears up for new season

Over the past few weeks, the wheels of the Hinsdale Central Model United Nations Club have started to turn. New and old members across all grade levels have started preparations for what club president Rebecca Lewis, senior, calls “a big rebuilding year.”

“We just had tryouts and took on 18 new members,” Lewis said.  In the 2011-2012 season, the club will participate in three conferences:  the Chicago International Model United Nations, the Model United Nations of the University of Chicago, and the Northwestern University Model United Nations.

The new team is currently in the midst of preparations for its first competition, the Chicago International Model United Nations conference, which is to be held Dec. 8-11 at Chicago’s Fairmont Hotel. There, Hinsdale Central will represent Malaysia in a debate “over nuclear proliferation, amongst other topics,” Lewis said.

“Hopefully we will win some awards at the conference, as well as help the new members gain some experience to lay a foundation,” Lewis said. According to Lewis, it will be no easy task preparing the new team to be formidable competitors. “Morning training is the best way to improve,” Lewis said.

Max Cornell, junior, is one of the eighteen new members admitted earlier this year. Cornell sees the Model UN as a great learning opportunity.  “I hope to gain an inside look at the workings of the UN and to increase my factual knowledge of global events,” Cornell said. “Most of the things I know about issues around the world come from news sources, so it will be interesting to find better insight from less biased authors.”
