Powderpuff is back at Hinsdale Central
On the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 8, Hinsdale Central juniors and seniors gathered together in the gym to receive information about the annual Powderpuff Football game.
Every year, during Homecoming week, Mrs. Kelly Watson, physical education teacher, and Mrs. Sally Philip, Activities Director, organize this event for junior and senior girls to compete in a touch football game coached by members of the varsity football team, whilst raising money for a charity.
This year’s game will be at 7 p.m. on Sept. 28 on Dickinson Field, and will raise money for charities that support colon cancer and brain cancer research. The money is raised through t-shirt sales, concessions and game tickets.
“We chose this cause because two of our Hinsdale Central staff members and their families have been impacted by these two diseases and we are truly inspired by them,” Watson said.
Last year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, like many other events, the Powderpuff game had to be canceled. However, some students were able to organize a makeshift game and practices at Katherine Legge Memorial Park.
“I’m glad they’re having an official game this year. Last year’s game was fun, but I think it’s better at school, especially because it supports a good cause,” senior Eleanor Monyek said.
Over the years, the seniors have had a winning streak, and hope it will continue.
“I got the seniors by a mile, the O-Line is fierce, like Stephanie Zeis, Abby Turek, Lexi McMahon, Olivia Plumpe, and Selma Sahli,” said Emmet Kelly, senior coach and varsity football player.
