On Sunday, Sept. 8, Kendrick Lamar dropped a video on Instagram announcing that he will be performing at the Super Bowl LIX halftime show. Students and teachers all around Central had differing opinions on Lamar’s announcement.
“It’s great that he’s doing the Super Bowl,” said Albin Stromberg, junior. “He needs to play his older music because those are his better songs, but he is a great pick for all audiences and everyone knows his music.”
In the announcement video, Kendrick is seen standing on a football field in front of a large American flag as he shoots footballs out of a machine. He announced that he will perform and then followed it by saying “I wouldn’t want you to miss it.” Then, the video concludes with the Apple Music logo.
Following his appearance in the 2022 halftime show with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Mary J. Blige, this won’t be Lamar’s first time being in the spotlight on football’s biggest night of the year. Now, he will have the stage all by himself.
“I am really excited to see if he has the courage to play the song ‘Not Like Us,’ his diss track on Drake that he recently came out with,” said Grace Assicurato, senior.
Other students weren’t as sure about Lamar performing.
“I am really excited but also feel like the audience at the game is not ‘his’ audience and may not fit the vibe of his music, ” said Sophie DiPasquale, senior.
Some students would have preferred having a different artist perform.
“I like him, but I think Pitbull would be a better pick, ” said Sophia Thompson, senior.
Certain teachers didn’t have too strong of opinions on the pick.
“I feel fine about it,” said Brian Griffin, math teacher.
While there are rising questions on what songs Kendrick Lamar is going to play and who he is going to bring out during the performance, there is still lots of time before the Super Bowl. Overall, students are having a positive reaction with the news of Kendrick performing for the Super Bowl this year and will see the performance later in the year.
