On Friday, Jan. 31, The Weeknd released his sixth studio album. The album included 22 songs and had a duration of one hour and 24 minutes.
The album included collaborations with Anitta, Future, Travis Scott, Lana Del Ray, Playboi Carti, Giorgio Moroder, Florence + The Machine and Justice. Many students enjoy listening to these featured artists solo, which is why The Weeknd’s album is appealing to multiple audiences.
The Weeknd brought some new tunes into his music and created transitions throughout the album. He kept slow steady beats in his songs and sang in different tones. His album leaned more towards the R&B/Soul genre and not rap.
“I think this album was pretty different, it was a lot more calmer and less intense,” said Emma Knight-Jones, senior. “This specific song called ‘The Abyss’ sounds a lot like his other songs, which is why I really liked it.”
He re-released a song “São Paulo” featuring Anitta. This song has a phonk tune to it, hyping up the listener and has soft hard beats going throughout the song. This song was originally first released on Oct. 30, 2024.
Many students are excited to go to The Weeknd’s and Playboi Carti’s tour this year. He is also performing with a special guest, Mike Dean. This is reported as his final tour and tickets are being sold exponentially and rapidly, alongside of having to wait over an hour in queue on ticket purchasing websites. He is currently touring only across North America.
“The Weeknd has made many contributions to pop music and he seems like he’s underappreciated,” said Zaynab Guezzar, senior.
The Weeknd also has several unreleased songs, a popular one being ‘Trust Issues’ which was released first by Drake. His cover of that song is not on streaming services because it has not been published by him. A few being, ‘Pullin Up’, ‘Come Thru’, and ‘Remember You.’ Audios of his songs can be found on Spotify podcasts, Soundcloud, or YouTube.
“Hashtag, release ‘Come Thru’ on all streaming platforms,” said Noah Pelinkovic, senior. “It’s a fire song.”
