On March 31, indie rock group Boygenius released their debut album, “The Record.”

Boygenius is a supergroup formed by artists Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus. These artists are also independently known as solo indie-rock stars. The group primarily formed in 2018 when they released their EP, “boygenius.”

“I’ve always been a fan of Phoebe Bridgers,” said Sloan Newlin, junior. “Boygenius helped me discover more artists like her and made me fall in love with the group as a whole.”

The recordconsists of twelve songs and a total time of 42 minutes and 18 seconds. The album explores Baker, Bridges, and Dacus’ own experiences and thoughts on friendship, love, and self-worth. Although the album is a blend of these three artists, some songs can be singled out to have a stronger inspiration from one of them.

“Songs like ‘not strong enough’ and ‘$20’ provide exciting melodies and thought-provoking lyrics, while slower songs like ‘emily i’m sorry,’ ‘cool about it,’ and ‘letter to an old poet’ evoke the same kind of sad-girl indie folk that fans of any of the artists will be sure to love,” said Kiran Gitzlaff, junior. “Ten out of ten, everything I wanted from it.”

Since the release, ratings have been very positive, earning a 8.2/10 on “Pitchfork” and other positive feedback.

“My personal favorite song is ‘Letter To An Old Poet’ because it’s about standing up for yourself and knowing your worth,” said Jimena Jimenez, senior. “It has a unique sound that feels genuine while being relatable.”

Alongside the album release, they also published “the film” directed by Kristen Stewart on their youtube channel. The 14 minute and 23 second film features various visuals for their album.

“‘The film’ enhanced the album and it really shows the relationship between Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus,” said Janet Leon, junior.
