Cross country teams dominates at regionals and sectionals

The boys cross country team won their Oct. 25 regional competition.

It was the team’s first regional championship since 1955, finishing 11 points ahead of the second place team from Downers Grove North. “It just shows how far we’ve come,” said Max Midlash, sophomore. “For a long time, most teams in our conference disregarded Hinsdale Central and now we’re just showing them that we’re better than that,” Midlash said.

Senior Jack Feldman also took an individual regional champion title, winning by almost nine seconds. The Devils continued to pull ahead at sectionals on Oct. 29, placing second only after Nequa Valley, who they will be running against at the state meet. Despite a lost shoe by senior Neil Pedersen after the first mile, all of the Central runners had a strong race.

Sophomore Kevin Huang also placed in the top seven Central runners, with a time of 16:47. He was the only underclassman in the top seven places.  “It feels awesome. I feel really honored to be able to be part of this team that could possibly be one of the best Hinsdale Central’s ever had, and I’m lucky to be one of the few that are going to be able to run down at state,” Huang said.   His goal is to break 16 seconds, which he believes is possible at State.

With the state championships coming up on Nov. 5, the Devils continue to prepare and train, keeping their eyes on the prize. “For the team, our goal that we made last May has always been to be top five in the state. That would be the best we’ve ever done in Central history,” Huang said.

With two solid victories at both the regional and sectional meets, the team is gearing up for an exciting state meet this Saturday with the intention to win.
