Hamilton’s buzzer beater leads boys’ basketball to regional title
With time running down on the clock, the score tied and ‘Code Red’ screaming with new found enthusiasm, senior Chase Hamilton tracked down a rebound and put a shot back up as time expired. Although it looked as if the ball would fall just short, it managed to roll over the rim and score, giving Hinsdale Central a 53-51 win over Naperville Central as well as the regional championship.
When it started, the first half was an equally matched battle between the fourth seeded Devils and fifth seeded Redhawks. A Matt Bennett three pointer gave Naperville a one point edge at half.
After Naperville Central closed the third quarter on a run to take the lead at the break, the Devils opened the fourth quarter strong to bring the momentum back in their hands. The game featured 20 lead changes, according to High School Cube News, and was a back and forth affair.
With the game entering crunch time, the two teams were tied with just over a minute to go. Junior Matt Rafferty, en route to his 24 points, broke the tie by knocking in a huge three pointer. Naperville Central answered with a three of their own from Ryan Antony. However Central managed to score at the last second, and the rest is history.
Now in the sectional semifinals, the No. 4 seeded Devils will face off against the No. 1 seeded Benet Redwings, who feature Xavier commit Sean O’Mara.
