Boys varsity swim team takes home first place at state
This past weekend, IHSA hosted the annual boys swim state meet. Hinsdale Central took the state title with 253 points, well surpassing New Trier with 134 points. The meet was held at the FMC natatorium in Westmont, Illinois. The preliminary session took place Friday, Feb. 24 and the finals session was on Saturday, Feb. 25.
From Hinsdale Central there were 12 state qualifiers in the water competing. To qualify, the swimmer must reach the time standard in their event. The path to state was long but the hard work paid off.
“I focused on trying to calculate just how many times we could rewrite the history books,” said Robert Barber, boys varsity coach. “The path along the way has been a lot of fun.”
The Hinsdale Central Boys swim team is now ranked number one in the nation after such an accomplished weekend. Not only did the boys win first in all three relays —400 freestyle, 200 medley, and 200 freestyle— they set state records in all three.
“A highlight for me was anchoring the 4×100 freestyle relay Saturday where we closed the meet by setting our third state record,” said Andrew Gilbert, captain. “It was incredibly rewarding to end the season on such a high note.”
The team went out and showed out with winnings in hand.
“A highlight for me was finally achieving our crazy goal of breaking all three state records at the meet this year,” said Noah Priest, senior.
