On April 2, Trump signed many executive orders, one of them which imposed a minimum 10% tariff on all U.S imports, effective April 5, according to CNN News. This executive order received lots of backlash and outrage among the American people. Something that made this order impactful compared to most others is that it affects most, if not all, American people on a daily basis.
Trump is instituting this because he says that it will encourage more US customers to buy more American made goods, increase the amount of taxes raised and lead to huge levels of investment in the country.
The reason that this affects Americans is because this is pushing up prices across a range of imported goods. This is even affecting Hinsdale Central students as they are beginning to make and spend their own money.
“I don’t understand why Trump needed to impose those tariffs,” said Laila Baridi, senior. “Now everything is much more expensive, and I’m not even making more money.”
Some students are hearing a lot about these tariffs but are having a hard time understanding why they are being instituted and are annoyed by it, like most Americans.
However, some can see why and actually think it’s good for our economy.
“I, like many others, dislike the institution of the tariffs, but my dad told me that in the long run this will be good for our economy and the prices will go back to normal,” said Lillian Luct, senior.
When asked how this is affecting students day to day life ,the answer remained pretty similar.
“It doesn’t affect me that much,” said Jack Carlin, senior. “I am just annoyed because I’m spending more money than I did for the same things.”
