The Hinsdale Central boys varsity basketball team played against Wheaton Academy on Jan.17, 2025. The team won with a score of 85-69. They have been on a winning streak, as they have not lost a game since the team played Glenbard West on Dec. 6, 2024.
Currently the boys basketball team’s record is 19-2. Many players on the team were happy with their performance last Friday night.
“Our team has done a very good job at staying consistent and maintaining a high level of play throughout this season, and I think that was shown on Friday,” said Tyler Thick, a senior on the team. “We were able to get the ball in transition really well, and we made 10 assists in the first quarter alone which is something that Coach Latorre and our team strives for.”
Other players have different opinions on how the game went.
“I think we could have performed better against Wheaton Academy, but we were still able to do a lot of good things. Defensively, we allowed them to get way too many easy points which allowed them to keep it close,” said Cole Bero, a junior on the team “We were able to come out of the game with a win, but this kind of performance against a top team might not end up with the same result.”
Players on the team prepare for big games, like the one against Wheaton Academy, differently.
“For me, rest is key. The night before I need to make sure I get to bed at a reasonable time and get at least eight to nine hours of sleep.” Bero said. I also need to focus on my hydration and nutrition the day of the game. I make sure to eat a lot of carbs and some protein.”
Some players have a certain routine that they do before every game.
“Ever since I can remember I’ve been a very superstitious person…Some of the things I like to do before games are getting to the gym 15 minutes before the sophomore game, going through the same routine in layup lines, and giving each of my teammates a high five before the national anthem,” Thick said.
Players have a lot of team goals for the rest of their season.
“Some goals of ours is to not let up, we’ve had a lot of success this season and we need to keep it up by practicing hard and pushing each other every day,” said Joaquin Miyawaki, a junior on the team.
People on the team also have personal goals.
“Personally I want to thrive in my role…whether that’s getting rebounds, playing tough defense, or scoring around the basketball,” Thick said. “I want to stay consistent for the rest of the year and do whatever it takes to help us win.”
