The varsity hockey Red Devils won two of their three preseason games this weekend, with all three games being held at Willowbrook Ice Arena. Lyons Township, Brother Rice, the combined Lincolnway team, and Hinsdale Central all played against each other over the course of the weekend.

The first matchup was against the Lincolnway combined varsity team on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 2:55 p.m. The Devils came out firing, scoring a goal in the first minute and taking a 2-1 lead into the half. The second half became the Zach Devine show, as he scored three straight goals. Staunch defense limited Lincolnwood to just seven shots in the final 30 minutes, earning a 5-2 win for the Devils.

The second and most anticipated game was against Lyons Township at 5:50 p.m. of the same day. The Devils appeared to score again early, but goalie interference nullified Sebastien Dufort’s goal. After LT scored first, Central tallied three consecutive to make it 3-1 at halftime. After a goal by both teams, the game slowed to a more physical matchup. A last second empty net goal pushed it to a 5-2 win, extending the 8 year win streak over LT.

The next day, the Devils matched up with Brother Rice, at 4:35 p.m. In a tight game, the Devils tied the game just before the buzzer, finishing the game with a 4-4 tie. At the end of the game, a scuffle ensued at the Devils’ blue line. Central’s goaltender took exception to a collision with a Brother Rice player. After some pushing and shoving and minimal punches thrown, both teams cleared the ice.

The next game for the Devils is on Sunday, September 25, at 6:30 p.m. They will face the Naperville North Huskies at All Seasons Ice Rinks.
