Board battle: Junior Will Read fights Lincoln-Way’s Michael Tucker for the puck in the third period. The Devils would hold on for the win.

The varsity hockey Red Devils defeated Lincoln-Way 3-0 at Willowbrook Ice Arena on February 11. The win advanced them to the West Cup semifinals.

Lincoln-Way started Junior Chris Aleo at goaltender, who was coming off a solid performance in their win against Oak Park-River Forest. Senior Thomas Labno started for Hinsdale Central, playing in his second playoff game this season.

After five minutes without a goal, Junior defenseman Marcus Weller opened the scoring with an assist from senior Chase Coghill. Both teams picked up penalties as the game went on, with Lincoln-Way senior Michael Tucker and Hinsdale Central senior Colin Sullivan both taking minor penalties later in the period.

Senior Alexander Hadesman extended Hinsdale Central’s lead to 2-0 after he scored on a pass from senior Zach Devine. The score remained stagnant for the rest of the second period, with Labno and Aleo both making quality saves.

The score remained the same until Central caught a lucky break in the third period. Senior Pete Cook’s shot was deflected directly to Hadesman, who had a wide open net and scored his second of the game. Labno shut the door for the rest of the game, and earned a shutout with 20 saves.

With this win, the Red Devils advance into the West Cup semifinals, earning the second seed in pool A. They will face Maine, who is the first seed in pool B, in the next round of competition.
