The Varsity hockey Red Devils started their showcase weekend in style by taking down Lincoln-Way 5-1 at Willowbrook Ice Arena on September 21. The game was the Devils’ first back at home in Willowbrook, and a rematch of last year’s West Cup series.
The Devils started hot, with senior forward Will Read scoring early in the first period. They added one more shortly after, scoring two goals in their first five shots on Lincoln-Way senior Chris Aleo. The offense slowed down later, but they maintained strong pressure throughout the first thirty minutes. Lincoln-Way broke their silence near the end of the period, beating Devils starting goaltender Miles Anderson over his right shoulder to make it 2-1.
From that point, it was all Devils. Three straight goals made the score 5-1, capped off by a goal from sophomore forward Derek Dazé.
In addition to the offensive firepower, Anderson had a stellar performance. The Benet senior allowed just one goal on more than 20 shots, including several high danger chances throughout the game. He’ll be asked to take on a bigger role in net this season with the graduation of Thomas Labno and the promotion of sophomore Dylan Dwyer to varsity.
Their season continues on September 29 at Canlan Ice Arena in Romeoville, when they go on the road to face Neuqua Valley.
