On Sept. 5, the boys soccer team took on the Brother Rice High School (BR) Crusaders in the fourth regular season game at home on Centennial Field. At the end of the game, BR defeated the Devils with a score of 0-1.
The first half ended scoreless. Both teams showcased their skill by delivering many chances and shot attempts. Despite the multiple shot attempts, the keepers kept blocking shots to keep the score low. Hinsdale Central’s Martin Contreras, senior, stood tall against all the pressure, which was the same for the Brother Rice keeper.
“This game has been a roller coaster of emotion for me. What a game by both of the goalkeepers,” said Pavle Ivkovic, senior.
The second half was, as consistent as the first half, with many saves; both teams put pressure on the keepers with multiple on target shot attempts.
In the last five minutes of the game, a Brother Rice player delivered a shot that slipped through Martin Contreras’s hands and resulted in a Rice goal. Hinsdale Central tried to initiate an offensive attack, but the game ended before Central could score.
The match ended with a loss and a final score of 0-1. The Devil’s current record is 0-4-1. Team captains are trying to keep their teammates hyped and motivated for the next matchup against Proviso West.
“We’re gonna stick through it together as a team; if we keep practicing and hustling, then eventually the wins will follow right after,” said Christopher Koulouris, senior.
Michael Wiggins, the coach of the team, plans to take it one step at a time.
“It’s really one game at a time until the end of the year,” Wiggins said. “It’s a whole process of building to the playoffs.”
The team is scheduled to play against the 2-1 Proviso West Panthers on Sept. 10 at home. The varsity boys soccer team is working harder than ever in training to break this losing streak and ensure a win against the Panthers.
