The USC (University of South Carolina) #SpeakYourMIND challenge started on March 31, 2025, and it is meant to help raise awareness for mental health and those who are struggling with it. It has now spread to Hinsdale Central. For the challenge you have to thank the friend who nominated you for the challenge, nominate three to five of your friends and then pour ice water on yourself.
“It’s nice we brought back the ice bucket challenge,” said Joao Lourenco, senior.
The Mental Illness Needs Discussion (MIND) club started this challenge in March to help raise some funds for a non profit organization called Active Minds.
“The water was so cold I jumped out of my seat,” said Owen Stamer, senior.
This isn’t the first time we had an ice bucket challenge. Back in 2014, there was the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in which the challenge spread awareness for the disease called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease which affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. This challenge raised about $115 million for the cause.
All you have to do is grab a bucket, fill it up with water, put ice in it, get one of your friends to pour it, record it, tag your friends and post it on social media.
“It’s surprising how fast the challenge spread,” said Josh Bey, senior.
