A new French club has started up at Hinsdale Central at the beginning of this school year. Meetings are held every other Monday in room 1309, offering an immersive experience indulging in French culture. With Madame Chaney as the sponsor of the club, and a student board full of French-speaking students, French Club is a true opportunity to learn the French language and explore different traditions and customs.
This club has a strong social media presence, specifically on Instagram, with posts of their club reminders for meetings and experiences. In meetings, students plan out activities, such as drawing the glorious Eiffel Tower outside and building the tower out of spaghetti and marshmallows. While students learn about important structures within French culture, they are also engaging in hands-on activities using their creative skills.
“In French Club…we watch French movies…my goal for the club is to increase the size and get more people to join,” said Sherine Nehme, the senior co-social media manager.
As most club meetings take place after school, students get to end their school day with fun activities, such as watching movies in French where they can visually experience French style and language. Students have also brought in traditional French baguettes for students to snack on and rewind.
With the growth goal the club has, board members have placed flyers around the school and used social media to persuade students to come to meetings and experience their cultural activities.
“We hope to do a co-group waffle fundraiser or go to a creperie little field trip after school,” said Paolo Tobiano, the senior co-social media manager.
To fund the club, the students in the French club hope to collaborate with an Eiffel Tower ice cream truck to sell sweet treats with a percentage of the funds going to fund the activities and materials needed for the French Club. As for outside of school the students plan to visit the creperie where they can taste and create the traditional french desert, the crepe.
“At our meetings we basically just eat snacks, usually French related things, and there are different activities and crafts,” said Alexis Crammer, a senior on the board.
The French club offers a taste of French culture through various foods and activities making it the ultimate cultural experience for students.
