Many students are beginning to feel the pressure of the Advanced Placement exams as they are getting closer and closer this season. With weeks of studying, review packets, practice tests and balancing regular classwork, AP students are entering one of the most stressful times of the school year.
AP exams are known for covering an entire year’s worth of material in one test. For students taking multiple AP classes, the workload can quickly become overwhelming. Between late night study sessions and trying to keep up with sports, clubs, jobs and family responsibilities, many students say the stress is real.
“I am taking six AP exams and it’s been super stressful trying to keep up with studying since it’s the end of the school year. I play volleyball for the school and it’s hard trying to manage my time studying for these exams. It’s also hard because I’m figuring out college and trying to make time for friends,” said Eeshan Lal, senior.
Many students also feel pressure because AP scores can lead to college credit or stronger college applications. That added importance makes exams feel even more intense. Students often feel that months of effort come down to a single week of testing.
“I’m nervous about the AP test just because I want to make sure that I can get a high score and so that I am able to use this high score in the future for college,” said Charlie Tornabene, sophomore.
Teachers are reminding students that preparation over time matters more than last minute cramming. Many AP classes have started in class review sessions, practice essays and even study groups with teachers after school. During this stressful time teachers are reminding students to stay calm and trust what they have learned and reviewed throughout the year.
“Even though this is a stressful time, there are many dates before and after school that we will be reviewing for the AP Government test, but there are also other teachers that are doing the same for their students,” said Mr. DiMatteo, a AP Government teacher and Civics teacher.
The preparation for the AP exams are stressful but it’s also important to take care of yourself during these times. Getting enough sleep, eating well and even taking short breaks while studying can also help students stay focused. Many students find that studying consistently over several weeks is more effective than trying to cram everything in the night before.
Although AP exam season can be stressful, it also represents the hard work students and teachers at Hinsdale Central have to put in throughout the year. With preparation, balance and confidence, students can approach testing week ready to do their best and finish the school year strong.
