For many students, the final bell does not mean going home to relax, but instead heading to work right after. Whether it’s working at a restaurant in the area, a retail store, a babysitting job or tutoring, students have been balancing their homework with paychecks.
In suburban communities such as Burr Ride, Oak Brook and Hinsdale, student employment is common. Students have been taking jobs to save up college money, to spend on family and friends and mostly for financial independence. Working comes with great responsibility for teens as they have to learn to manage a schedule, show up on time and enhance their communication and organizational skills.
“I started working at Crumbl cookies a couple months ago; since it is a popular place I work very hard to keep up with demand,” said Franky Chemmachel, senior. “I love working there because I see a lot of familiar faces, learn to balance my work and school life, and I get money to spend on things I like.”
With many students working in the area, employed students see a lot of people they know while working which makes it more exciting for them. According to many, working has built character, increased their confidence and communication skills, and has truly prepared them for adulthood.
Many Central students prefer working at popular places so they can see friends while working, get a unique experience and see what work lies behind popular products. Most students enjoy working in restaurants, coffee shops and dessert places because they are more energetic environments.
“I work as a host at Nabuki and it is one of the most popular Hinsdale restaurants with such an ambient atmosphere,” said Olivia Elder, senior. “Working there is so fun because I get to socialize and help people with their table bookings…I have gotten so much more social and productive working there.”
A lot of students get to choose their hours, and many choose wisely because working too many hours can lead to burnout and lower academic performance. Many prioritize school and try to maintain a balance so that they receive income and academic validation at the same time.
“Working as a host Fuller’s is such a thrilling experience, I have become very close with all my co-workers which makes the job fun,” said Gabriella Carlini, senior. “I feel so accomplished when I put on my uniform and head out to put in work that rewards and educates me.”
For students, working has been a huge opportunity to make new friends with other people working with them. A lot of students take pictures in uniform to advocate for their workplace and to show their confidence in their work ethics.
Teenagers are navigating adult responsibilities like never before and according to many students, they have learned that lessons outside the classroom are just as valuable as the ones taught inside it.
