Girl’s Swim and Dive will compete at state on Nov. 18.

On Nov. 12, Girls’ Swim and Dive attended the IHSA sectionals at Downers Grove South and qualified for state in a total of seven events, taking second place overall with a team score of 266.5.

The team qualified in all three relay events: 200-yard medley (Hollis Clark, junior, Anna Glowniak, sophomore, Stephanie Bowater, junior, Emily Graham, junior), 200-yard freestyle (Mia Chiappe, senior, Anna Gruvberger, sophomore, Maddie Fowler, junior, Graham) and 400-yard freestyle (Rachel Fuechtman, sophomore, Chiappe, Gruvberger, Graham).

The other events that athletes will be entering individually include 100-yard butterfly (Gruvberger, Clark), 100-yard freestyle (Chiappe), 100-yard backstroke (Bowater, Clark) and 100-yard breaststroke (Glowniak).

The diving team also competed at sectionals, finishing strong.

“I’m super excited for the future of my divers. They really performed well at their first sectional meet,” said Mr. Steve Miller, diving coach.

Leah Stevens, sophomore, attended sectionals as a first time member of the team.

“I’m super happy with my score and my dives,” Stevens said. “This was an incredible experience and I hope to compete again next year.”

Looking ahead, the swimmers are excited for the state competition.

“I am happy with how sectionals turned out,” Chiappe said. “Overall as a team we are in a position we feel confident in.”

As is with many sports at Central, the team has experience competing on this level, and is eager to keep in mind their goals for the end of the season.

“Going into state we always had the goal to place. We want to be one of the top 10 teams and I truly believe we have the ability to do so,” Chiappe said.

The state meet is Nov. 18- 19 at Evanston Township High School. For a full list of sectional results, click here.
