As spring sports season wraps up for students, the boys tennis team at Hinsdale Central can proudly say that they played a great season this year. To players on this tennis team, tennis is more than a simple game of rackets and tennis balls. It is a journey of discipline, teamwork and personal growth.
Every afternoon after classes end, the school’s tennis courts come alive as players train for hours practicing their serves, backhand and footwork under the guidance of their coaches. The boys varsity tennis team is coached by head coach, Pete Alex, who led the team to state championship titles in 2024 and 2025.
This team also works with assistant coaches Mike Jazak and Dylan Canvan to critique their performance on the court and in games. This varsity team is known for its intense and high-level training leading to them frequently winning the Illinois High School Association Class 2A state title.
“We have built a very strong team bond this year, even with only playing singles and doubles games we spend our practices rallying with each other and training,” said Barry Zhu, a senior on varsity.
After spending weeks working on their skills players have the main goal to win the state championship like they did last year. Even though tennis is usually played as a singles and doubles sport, practicing together everyday and playing with new faces frequently has gotten the team to unite and become familiar with each other.
“We had our red and white varsity scrimmage on the ninth, it was a great way to represent our school colors and get the team together,” said Logan Milton, a senior on the varsity team.
The varsity team hosts multiple scrimmages during the season so that players can practice their techniques without the pressure of official ranking or scores.
“With all the work we have been putting in, our main priority is winning that fifth state title this season. We have been getting lots of practice in by playing other schools so that will prepare us for sure,” said Kyle McCain, a senior on the varsity team.
This team has taken on a multitude of other high schools including New Trier, Glenbard West, Downers Grove North and South and York. They have a high varsity record having won a majority of their games against all these other high schools.
The boys tennis team has put in a lot of work whether it be in team workouts, sprints, rallies, scrimmages or simple team bonding games this team plans to win the state championship title for the fifth time this year. The team is committed to developing new skills and techniques to deserve that title and are excited to wrap up the season on a good note.
