It’s fall sports season, and girls tennis is back in action. Hinsdale Central girls tennis teams have a history full of state championships, sportsmanship, and victories. But what about the present and the future?
Having won 20 state championships in Hinsdale Central girl’s history, the girls have been working hard since the beginning of this season to achieve that title again. Though tennis is a solo and duo sport, each team has shown a great sense of sportsmanship and team bonding through the various activities they plan out. Some of these activities include pasta parties and dressing up in themes to practices.
Being participants in the state championship, varsity tennis players are working extra hard this season to prepare for the big game. The senior girls have all been given the role as team captains and are leading the team to a victory with their organization and leadership skills.
“We, as captains, lead warmups every day. Outside of practice we design the team sweatshirts and coordinate social events, the biggest job is making sure everybody feels they are part of the team,” said Zayna Asbahi, a senior captain.
The girls have been representing their team spirit recently through designing their own merchandise clothing, including a variety of shirts and sweatshirts with team members’ names and the devil horns on them. With the season just beginning, so have the activities. A popular starting activity is the traditional pasta party, where a team member hosts the entire team to enjoy pasta and get to know each other.
“During the pasta party, we enjoyed the food and laughed the whole time,” said Anjali Srinivasan, a senior varsity capitan, “We bond the most through the games we play at tennis and also the pasta parties.”
Repping the red devils, girls tennis teams do high intensity workouts, daily practices, and other forms of preparation to build up a united team and strong individual players. Varsity’s coach, Shawna Zsinko, has been coaching girls tennis since 2017, and watched teams unite and fight their way to victory.
The team also bonds on the way to “away” games, requiring them to keep each other company on the longer rides to defeat other teams. At these tournaments players play in doubles and singles games, building up points to achieve a win.
“We bond a lot while driving to Burns Field together, where we practice. I drive my teammates and we converse in the car,” said Amira Jazayerli, a junior on JV1.
